Booklets Simplifying Legal Matters Published

A varied range of simplified materials on legal matters have been published for dissemination among members of the public and the legal community under the Access to Justice Programme.

About 227 public awareness booklets focusing on legal education and empowerment of ordinary citizens have been developed to enhance knowledge and responsiveness of the general public about their rights. These include frequently asked questions covering topics relevant to justice sector problems faced by people in day-to-day life.

The Access to Justice Programme Project Management Unit has already published and disseminated 25 guidelines for people on issues including how to acquire an NIC card, how to register an FIR, how to register a complaint against highhandedness of police officials, laws about consumer rights, legal cover for the rights of bonded labour and many others.

The booklets are available in the Urdu language and the unit has tried to reach out to the common man and furnish legal information through simplified messages. The material is being disseminated on a large scale through district councils, tehsil councils, union councils, libraries and public information stalls established at district courts. The publications are aimed at creating awareness among people about newly introduced police reforms. Attractive and informative posters have also been designed for people at grassroots level so that they can know about their rights in the civic and administrative system.

The movie posters will help in educating people about information and procedures for grievance redressal under the New Police Order like Role of District Public Safety Commission, Citizen Police Liaison Committee and Mechanism of Accountability of Police. Punjab IGP Azhar Hasan Nadeem has directed the authorities concerned to display the posters at police stations so that people could acquire information about their rights and accountability mechanisms under the police reforms.

The provision of a simplified version of legal materials is expected to facilitate people's access to justice at police stations and courts. The initiative, focusing on the common man, especially the poor, will create awareness among people about their rights and assist them in knowing their obligations as responsible citizens of Pakistan .
