Sos Posters Rolled Out To Local Businesses
The Derry Journal has this week rolled out hundreds of posters promoting the campaign against the closure of Malin Head coast guard station.
We have put up petitions and movie posters in shops, pubs and clubs all over the peninsula and we are urging people to join our fight and sign the petition.
The campaign was set up by the Malin Head Community Association and supported by the Journal and Inishowen Development Partnership.
So far we have uncovered a damming document which recommends the closure of our beloved 106-year-old station which slams the area for its lack of infrastructure.
We also revealed last week there was a binding contract between the British and Irish governments - dating back to 1948 - when the station was handed over, from the British to the Irish, which clearly states the station must never be shut.
Derry Journal’s Inishowen editor Pat McArt, said: “The campaign has been a huge success so far.
“We have had hundreds of petitions sent back into the Journal office.
“I want to thank those people that have been supporting it and I would like to urge those who haven’t signed a petition to sign one.”
Northern Ireland Assembly Member John Dallat, who has been backing the campaign, said: “Malin Head Coastguard Station will not be closed or downgraded provided every man, woman and child becomes involved in the campaign.
“This is important not only to the people of Donegal but for those who live in the North and in Scotland.”
