Craig High School Will Not Remove Gay-Straight Alliance Posters

The Gay-Straight Alliance in Janesville's high schools will be allowed to keep posters up for the Day of Silence scheduled Friday.

Craig High School Principal Mike Kuehne says No Child Left Behind legislation allows groups equal opportunities to have clubs and activities in high schools. All posters are approved before they're put on the walls.

A citizen at Tuesday's school board meeting says she's seen girls kissing girls and boys kissing boys at Craig and Parker. Kuehne says he talked with 10 veteran teachers about those comments. He says he doesn't know when or why the person was at Craig, but that behavior has not been seen by his staff. At Tuesday's meeting, the school board had an informal discussion about how appropriate those posters are. Commissioner Bill Sodemann says he is concerned they promote a lifestyle instead of education.
