Students Design Safety Posters For City
A drawing of a large orange hard hat dominates the centre of Julia Morrelli's poster as a reminder to wear that important piece of equipment.
"If you're in a building and something's unstable and it falls, then protects your head," she said, explaining her choice of subject matter.
On Friday morning, City of Orillia chief building official Kelly Smith visited the classroom to pick up a stack of posters that will be put on display for International Building Safety Week, May 5-11.
"We get posters, but I find they're kind of generic," she said. "I'd rather look at a child's poster."
She approached her son's teacher to see if the class would be interested in hearing a safety presentation and then drawing posters about what they learned.
Smith's job makes her responsible for three other inspectors in the department, so safety is always top of mind.
It's a message Daniel Brodhecker picked up on.
"If there's a construction site, just walk by it and don't go in it," he said.
His poster shows a site with heavy machinery and work crews wearing hard hats.
The children's artwork will be displayed at city hall and, Smith hopes, at building supply stores in the city.
