Artist Captures Essence Of Motorsports Park
The Millville resident spent hours researching and creating this colored-pencil art creation that features World War II aircraft, vintage racecars, the exterior of the Millville Army Air Field Museum and a portrait of a World War II flying ace.
While Roberts had to work quicker than normal - she only found out about the contest a few weeks before the submissions were due - she said Monday, during an unveiling of her winning image at the motorsports park's clubhouse, that she's happy with the way everything turned out.
"I didn't want to miss out," Roberts said of the competition. "The poster design was a challenge, but a lot of fun, too."
As winner of the poster contest, Roberts, a graphic designer who specializes in realistic and historical art, received a $300 award.
Her work will be printed on movie posters that will be handed out to the first 40,000 people to visit the motorsports park during its inaugural racing season.
"I used the prospectus as a guide for determining the images," Roberts said of her creative process. "The aircraft selection was easy. I chose the P-47 because of the natural tie-in with Millville Airport. The Corsair is my husband's favorite and the B-25 Mitchell is based on Tom Duffy's restored aircraft based at Millville Airport."
She added, "The pilot is no one in particular, just a combination of faces I researched."
Posters in the contest were judged on artistic merit, creativity, original concept and adherence to the stated design criteria.
The poster design had to be a recognizable scene and it had to represent New Jersey Motorsports Park, the Millville Army Air Field Museum, vintage racing and World War II-era military aircraft.
