Posters Raise Awareness Of Drug Alcohol Abuse

Northumberland County students have created posters on the dangers of drugs, alcohol and high-caffeine energy drinks, and they'll be on display this weekend.

People are invited to come out to Northumberland Mall this Saturday, from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m., to judge the contest featuring movie posters by students in Grades 7, 8, and high school.

The Northumberland Drug Action Committee has held the contest for the last three years, said member Cheryl Windolf of Cobourg District Collegiate Institute West, adding it's to help raise awareness about drug and alcohol abuse and also to include the community.

The winners of the contest, one elementary and one secondary student, will win $100 each and will be announced during Drug Awareness Week, from Nov. 16 to 22.

The high school students will be taking on energy drink posters. The drinks, Ms. Windolf said, have become a "hot" topic.

"It's showing to affect students' attentiveness," she said.

Students have different themes each year to work with.

"We try to mix it up a bit," she said.

The committee members come from the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, the Cobourg and Port Hope Police Services, Northumberland OPP, the public and Catholic school boards, and the Rebound, Fourcast, Cam H and Kinark community organizations.
